Hades Wasn’t the Devil—He Was the Gatekeeper of Souls

What if the god you’ve been taught to fear was never the villain at all?
Hades wasn’t evil. He wasn’t the devil. He didn’t trick souls or relish in torment. He guarded them. He watched over the threshold no one escapes—death—and kept the balance that allowed life to matter.
This isn’t just a mythology lesson. It’s a reclamation of power, of shadow, of misunderstood truth. If you’ve ever felt drawn to the underworld, to what’s hidden, or to the parts of yourself that don’t fit the light—you’ll want to meet the real Hades.
“There’s a lot of misunderstanding around Hades. People think he’s the devil. He’s not. Not even close.” -Starlite the Oracle
In Greek mythology, Hades wasn’t some power-hungry demon. He was a god who didn’t even want worship. He wore a helmet of invisibility and ruled over the underworld—not to dominate, but to protect.
“Hades was actually one of the most respected gods. He was always invited to judge because he was fair. He never wanted worship, unlike the other gods.”
He wasn’t obsessed with being seen. He wasn’t manipulative. He wasn’t vainglorious like Zeus. He didn’t need praise to validate his position.
“He had a helmet of invisibility… it talks to a character that can be in solitude. And still have high integrity without needing to be managed, controlled, worshipped.”
That’s real power. That’s divine masculinity.
It’s no coincidence that Pluto—Hades’ Roman counterpart—rules the 8th house in astrology: death, rebirth, sex, power, and transformation. Not because he’s malevolent. But because someone has to hold the door open to the underworld and not flinch.
“It’s a very noble job to do. To rule over the souls, to protect the souls.”
He was objective. Discerning. He could judge souls without being corrupted by them. And that’s why he was trusted with the dead.
But He Had One Fatal Flaw
He wasn’t perfect. In fact, he crossed an unforgivable line.
“In many retellings, especially modern ones, Hades’ abduction of Persephone is seen as a rape—a violation of her will and sovereignty. Whether symbolic or literal, this reading reveals the shadow side of desire: when longing becomes control.”
This is the shadow side of Pluto. The darkness of desire when it turns to control. And we won’t gloss over it.
The myth is complex. It contains both harm and transformation. And while later versions show Persephone growing into her power and choosing to return to Hades, that doesn’t erase the violence of her initiation.
This is where the shadow of Hades—and Pluto—becomes real. Not just mythic.
Because all power contains the seed of misuse. All transformation requires choice. And if something begins with force… healing cannot be assumed.
What we reclaim from this myth is not a glorification of the abuser—but an invitation to sit with the paradox:
Can something sacred grow from what was once traumatic?
Persephone doesn’t excuse him. She evolves through it. She becomes Queen of the Underworld by her own right. Not as a victim. But as a sovereign.
“She has an interesting archetypal story of going from only spring to ruling the underworld. Wanting to be there. Choosing Hades.”
The God of Shadow and Sovereignty
This is the real story of Hades. Not evil. Not a devil. A gatekeeper. A judge. A guardian of transformation.
And in many ways, he is the test.
You don’t face Hades unless your soul is ready. And if you flinch? If you tap out early? You try to bypass your fate? You don’t get to ascend—you get stuck.
Not because Hades (Pluto) hates you. But because the Underworld doesn’t lie.
It reveals.
It strips away illusion. It shows you what’s unintegrated, what’s incomplete. Hades doesn’t punish the broken—he honors the ones who stay through the breaking.
Harsh? Yes. But transformation isn’t for the faint of heart. And the underworld is not for the easily broken.
Pluto doesn’t want your fear. He wants your will.
“I’m coming to make you the fucking strongest warrior ever. For you to quit when I’m building you? Pathetic.”
This is the god of the shadow, not because he wants you to suffer. But because he wants you to evolve. To reclaim. To become.
And to those who endure?
You don’t just survive the underworld.
“You come back with the elixir.”
